Ward 5 Race is Heating Up
There are five races for the Raytown Board of Aldermen this election. All of them appear to be hotly contested with candidates hard at it taking their message to the voters.

By far, Ward 5 is the most interesting race. There are three candidates contending for the winner-take-all contest to be decided on April 4th. The candidates are as different as the day is long.

A former newspaper publisher, a local business owner and a former State Representative are squared off in what appears to be a cage fight in which only one will walk away. This is a “ladies only” event. There are no men in this contest.

THE CANDIDATES (in the order they will appear on the ballot):

PHYLIS GOFORTH: Phylis Goforth owns and operates PJ’s and Company, a hair salon located in Downtown Raytown. She is an Associate Member of the Raytown Area Chamber of Commerce and is also Vice President of the Downtown Raytown Main Street Association. This is Mrs. Goforth’s first attempt to seek a publicly elected office.

BONNAYE MIMS: Bonnaye Mims served two terms in the Missouri State Legislature representing southern precincts of Raytown. She owns her home in Raytown and has lived there six years. During her four years in the House, she earned a good reputation for bringing tax dollars back to the District in funding for mental health, veterans and the homeless.

DIANE KRIZEK: This is Diane Krizek’s third run for public office in the Raytown area. She lost the race to former Ward 5 Alderman Pat Riehle in 2000. Last August she ran third in a five-way race for State Legislature. Mrs. Krizek has been active in Raytown Friends of the Park and organized the annual Raytown Fall Music Festival. She owned the Raytown Brooking Eagle, which ceased publication in November, 2016.

Alderman Emerson
to have Foot Surgery
Ward 3 Alderman Janet Emerson sized up her situation with the following words, “If I didn’t have bad luck, I wouldn’t have any luck at all!”

Last week we reported that Emerson had fallen while campaigning for re-election to her seat on the Raytown Board of Aldermen. After putting a yard sign in a supporter’s yard, her foot became stuck in a hole in ground.

“I heard a loud “crack” and felt severe pain in my right foot,” said Emerson.

X-rays show the “loud crack” was the arch of her foot being broken. As it turns out, the foot was fractured in four places. Her doctor told her it would take surgery to repair the damage.

Emerson wants to hold off the surgery until after the April 4th Election.

“I cannot walk on the foot, but can still get around the house with the aid of a walker,” said Emerson.

Her opponent in the race is Ryan Myers. Political observers consider the contest a close one. The Ward 3 incumbent is not taking anything for granted.

Her daughter, Lisa Emerson, who served as Secretary of the Raytown Charter Commission, is out knocking doors on her behalf. As is her seatmate for Ward 3 on the Board of Aldermen, Mark Moore.

Raytown Fire Protection District President Bob Palmer, and Vice President of the Fire District, Barb Schlapia, are also going door to door in Ward 3 on Emerson’s behalf.

For her part, Emerson is doing her campaigning from home.
“I may not be able to walk to my constituent’s doors, but I have a phone, and I will be using it”, said Emerson.

How great is our community when people like Fire District folks Bob Palmer and Barb Schlapia chip in and campaign to help Ward 3 Alderman Janet Emerson who due to a fall and injury is unable to campaign. That's a good sign of respect for a proven leader like Emerson who I hear is a tireless worker currently serving as the Mayor Pre Tem. Get well soon Janet Emerson!

I agree with Anonymous, March 6, 2017 at 8:24 AM.
Alderman Janet Emerson is Old School Raytown. We need a more like her on the Board

We do have great folks in Raytown

I understand that she will be having surgery on the 21st. Get well soon Alderman Emerson.

Isn't the Fire Department being sued by the city right now for a bunch of money? Sounds like a conflict of interest if their President and VP are helping Emerson get re-elected.

I don't think it's a conflict of interest I think it shows the human side of our city and our politics doesn't rule everything like Aziere , Creamer and Randy Battagler try to make it look

I was going to get a subscription to Randy's paper BUT after reading this week’s nonsense that he, Joe Creamer and Jim Aziere wrote I’m not spending money on a rag like that.

So Randy buckles to what few friends he has and lets Creamer resurface as if he was summoned from God to serve the community. His promise to quit spreading vicious alternative facts so the community could focus on the candidates and the upcoming campaign was as hollow as his record of serving his constituents while an Alderman. But at this point the fingers are squarely pointed at Battagler as well who could not "just say no" and once again shows no resemblance of a spine. Battagler's pitiful weekly whining usually centers on the community not supporting his publication and closely resembles subscription panhandling. This week his pity party portrayed him not being picked on the kickball team as he outlined himself no longer being "one of the boys" and invited out to have a few beers after council meetings in hopes his alcohol tab would be picked up. Very sad....

Battagler's other whine this week was the Board has too many meetings and he can't keep up. NEWS FLASH. Randy has missed so many events and meetings this claim by him is nothing short of being lazy. Former Brooking Eagle writer Kris Collins consistently was the only reporter at events and meetings to a fault. Look thru the Raytown Times and most all the photos are tagged Courtesy Photo. Our community really deserves a newspaper that is not full of untruths and an Editor that has the pride and professional work ethic to cover the news.

I hope whoever is elected will work to create an effective Police department and get rid of the Lynch/Bowman show that has costs the city millions and has done nothing for Raytown.

Sincerity and warm fuzzies aside, politics is business that deals with tax dollars of hard working citizens. A department/board that owes hundreds of thousands of dollars to the City of Raytown is actively campaigning for a candidate. If that doesn't spell out "corrupt agenda", I don't know what does.

Raytown Times. AKA FAKE NEWS...Read All About It..

One of the most award-winning and respected police departments in the metropolitan area. How stupid a comment this is

Aziere, Creamer and Battagler are embarrassing to this town, sad thing is they even know it. These people have no class or character. Raytown is better than this.

So that it is not misunderstood the reply 1158 was to mean that the comment by 1104 was a stupid comment because we have an award-winning and respected Police Department

Since when is helping someone a conflict of interest. Grow up, people like you are what is wrong with today's society.
