Destination Locations BY GREG WALTERS

There are a number of destination locations people from all over Raytown and beyond frequently visit.

One notable location is Crane Brewery. This start-up brewery has made its mark on the Kansas City area. It has a clean, friendly atmosphere where people gather regularly to relax at the end of the day and on weekends.

Until recently, Cranes was also the home of Harp Barbeque. Harp Barbeque recently lost its license to operate in Jackson County by the Jackson County Health Department. SEE THE FOLLOWING STORY FROM THE KC STAR

It’s a shame. Nothing goes together better than mouthwatering barbeque with some tasty suds to wash them down.

Another destination location is Doughboys Donuts, located in the Woodson Shopping Center at 63rd and Woodson Road. Doughboys is the recipient of the following awards and recognitions:

  • Pitch Magazine's "Best Pastry Award"
  • The Macaroni Kid called Doughboy's a "Best Kept Secret"
  • KMBZ named Doughboys one of the top five Donut shops in the Kansas City Area

Its best recommendations come from the people who regularly stop by to enjoy their mouth watering donuts.

Los Compas, a Restaurant located at 9055 East 350 Highway specializing in Mexican food, is also known to attract visitors from outside of Raytown. Its décor is so well done it makes you “feel” as if you are in Mexico. The food is good, and reasonably priced. Be sure of this . . . You will not leave Los Compas feeling hungry.

Shanghi Express is located at 6340 Raytown Road. This small carry out restaurant specializes in what is commonly known as Chinese food. It is reasonably priced with a menu full of so many choices no one will be leave unsatisfied. The portions are generous. The food is delicious.

And, this part is important, especially when you are in a hurry. The service is fast and pleasant.

Those are some choices we believe are worth noting. Most readers are probably familiar with them. If not, next time you are in the mood for a tasty treat, a good meal, or some simple relaxation, check them out.

If you have any choices you would like to add to the list, feel free send them to us at gregtwalters@sbcglobal.net

Why did Jackson County

Shut Down Harp Barbecue?

Kansas City is renowned the world over for its barbecue. So it’s more than a little perverse that one of the area’s best barbecue spots has been shut down for — what, being too popular?

Word came on social media this past week that Raytown’s Harp Barbecue, named best BBQ in KC a year ago by Kansas City Magazine, was shut down by the Jackson County Environmental Health Division over COVID-19 protocols, however indiscriminately applied.

Harp is not alone. The county quietly decided in August to cancel an undisclosed number of temporary food permits and not issue any more for the remainder of the year, effective Sept. 8.

Everyone knows that buying BBQ is much more dangerous than a Saturday trip to Home Depot or Hyvee. The lack of logic surrounding the Covid response is astounding. It seems like someone's goal is to do as much economic damage as possible in the name of keeping us "safe". Free the BBQ!

Thanks for bring back memories:
1) SHANGHAI EXPRESS: There was a Chinese restaurant in that location when my late wife and I lived near 75th & Troost 1994-97 we receive a BOGO coupon for a Chinese restaurant at that location. I got lost with confusion over Raytown Rd and Tfwy but we enjoyed the meal and returned several times and combined grocery shopping at 63rd and Raytown Tfwy. When I moved to Raytown in '99, I still enjoyed dinners there. Then the business closed for an unknown reason and reopened. I don't know if it was the same business or not.
2) LOS COMPAS: I enjoyed many fine meals there! I stopped for dinner there my last day in Raytown as I was leaving town.

As a longtime small business owner in Raytown I certainly respect others that have decided to make Raytown home for their small business as well. There certainly are many others that deserve to be on this list, but I can appreciate the lengthy list that would be. I just can't say enough good things about the owners of Shanghai Express though who endured 2 break ins with 1 being an armed robbery. They had every reason to close up shop and most certainly would have understood that decision. Great food, great service, but even greater people!! Thank you for staying and serving your many fans including myself! I do think not mentioning Clark's Appliances who have served not only Raytown citizens but those Metro wide for what 63 years was an oversight worth mentioning. Please make a commitment to shop and support all our local small businesses with many of the owners being local residents and our neighbors.

Raytown Seed & Feed has been in business for a total of 63 years also under 2 different owners. Now it is just small engine repair and sales of new equipment.

In early Sept this blog reported: "Missouri State Statutes require the Board to review the State Audit before it is released to the public. Sources at City Hall place the release date to the public to be September 29th or 30th."

Today is Oct 2nd and still no update.

How bad can the findings be!

A big " Thank you" for the nice person who posted Raytown Seed & Feed in the comments! We run a shop with one mechanic that has over 40 years of experience and he takes pride on doing the job right.
It is hard to keep a small business running in these hard times with all the taxes that small businesses have to pay. P lease support All small business in Raytown!
