Election Notes . . .
BY GREG WALTERS
Last Tuesday’s election was one for the record books. Raytowners turned out in higher than usual numbers to participate in the Primary Election.

No doubt, part of the turnout was fueled by many contests for seats on the Jackson County Legislature. The Right to Work issue also drew a large number of voters. This is evidenced by the extremely high number of absentee votes cast in the election. Over 400 absentee votes were counted. The majority of which were in opposition to the three Raytown tax increases.

All of that aside, the local focus was on three controversial tax increase questions brought before the voters by Mayor Michael McDonough and his City Council.

The final vote tally tells the story most accurately. Raytown voters “roared” their disapproval of the three tax proposals. All three of the tax proposals lost by lopsided landslide proportions rarely seen in issue oriented campaigns.

How did this come to pass? At the beginning of the campaign the Mayor and City Council unanimously approved moving forward with the tax increases. Though there was some dissension by some members of the governing body, neither the Mayor or any members of his Board of Aldermen publicly opposed any of the tax proposals.
  • The Mayor’s committee had crafted the tax proposals.
  • The Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Main Street Association endorsed all the taxes. The City Council had unanimously approved placing the issues on the ballot.
  • All three of the issues had the managerial backing of Raytown Unleashed. A popular Face Book which boasts a membership of over 10,000.
  • The pro tax campaign claimed the support of organized labor. A contention that was disputed throughout the campaign by the opposition.
In other words, this election was city hall's to lose and lose it they did. Here is what they did wrong.

FACEBOOK REACTION: No doubt the Facebook Page Raytown Unleashed did have an effect on the outcome of the election. Reports of people in opposition or even just daring to post questions on the page were frustrated by learning their posts had been removed by the Administrator of the page. Some members were blocked from commenting. The heavy-handed tactics used by Raytown Unleashed administrators seem to have caused a backlash amongst its members.

HARASSMENT OF THE OPPOSITION: One of the first lessons learned in politics is that it is NEVER a good idea to harass the opposition. Consider the following story as told by Henry Carner, Chairman of a Political Action Committee named No New Taxes.

No New Taxes came together to protect taxpayers from excessive taxation and over-reach by governmental bodies in Eastern Jackson County. The group, No New Taxes, successfully defeated similar tax schemes in Blue Springs and Independence.

Carner relayed he received a phone call from Citizens for Progress. The caller told Carner, “I am calling you as a courtesy”. He wanted to know why Carner was involved in a Raytown campaign since he lived in Independence.

After being told three times that he was being called as a “courtesy” Carner had heard enough.

Carner asked if the phone call was being recorded, and being assured it was not, Carner replied, “That’s too bad, because I want you and your friends to understand very clearly what I think of you and your three tax increases.”

Carner explained, “Three tax increases at once is proof your city is mismanaging the people’s money. Those three taxes are unfair, vile and reprehensible.”

This actually backfired on Citizens for Progress. Carner went on to work to raise funds to help pay for a mailer that was against the tax increases.

More accurately stated . . .  It is NEVER a good idea to try to intimidate the opposition.

DOUGHBOYS: Doughboys is a very popular gathering spot for many Raytowners. The award winning Doughnut shop is a jewel in Raytown’s crown. It is a destination for many that actually draws people to our city. Elisa Breitenbach and her husband, Marjain, were told Raytown Unleashed allowed (with their new censorship policy) the publishing of a post on Facebook in which the poster saying they would never go to Doughboys because they opposed the tax increase.

WHISKEY BARREL: Other businesses have been threatened with a boycott for having the incorrect sign in their yard. In fact, the owner of the Whiskey Barrel, Connie Maxwell, was told her business was on a list of those to be boycotted.

This baffled Ms. Maxwell as she, in fact, did not have a sign on her property.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE JEROME BARNES Ward 5 Alderman Bonnaye Mims mailed a letter with screen shots of comments posted on Facebook by Ward 2 Alderman Jason Greene, Ward 4 Alderman Steve Meyers, and City Collector Cathy Schutte condemning State Representative Barnes for not endorsing the three tax increase.

Mims wrote, "Jerome Barnes is my friend. I will not stand by while he is unfairly attacked."

Mims continued, "The days of paying homage to self-proclaimed political bosses are behind us. We will no longer tolerate that kind of politics."

Barnes’ position that he represents everyone in Raytown, not one side or another in a local political fight, demonstrates statesmanship. His response to me when directly asked where he stood was that he would cast his vote in the privacy of the voting booth.

Well said, Mr. Barnes.

RDA AND NO NEW TAXES: Raytown lacks a regular newspaper, so any news source, be it print or electronic, is generally welcomed with open arms. The Raytown Democrat Association (RDA) stepped up to the plate by publishing a ballot in which its members  voted to oppose all three tax increases all three new tax increases.

No New Taxes mailed a city wide brochure explaining the pitfalls of the tax increases. Henry Carner explained, “We decided early on to stick strictly to the tax issue questions and to leave personalities out of the campaign”.

A FINAL WORD: The voters listened to what the politicians at City Hall had to say. Last Tuesday, it was the voters turn to speak. The question now is will the politicians listen?

Calls for boycotts of local businesses by supporters of the three tax increases are counterproductive. Do they not understand? The businesses they want to boycott pay the taxes that keep our city running.

The Board of Aldermen should renounce and condemn these tactics as  counterproductive to Raytown’s future. If they do not, the faith and trust of the voters may very well be the price they pay.

Paul is off on a road trip this week. Look for his Paul Livius Report of next Tuesdays Board of Aldermen meeting next week.

It would be interesting to hear from any other businesses or citizens that feel that they were harassed re this tax vote by any third party (i.e. PAC, elected official) previously unknown to them. If you don't wish to comment publicly, please document the date and time, who contacted you, and specifically what they said to you that may have made you feel intimidated. If you continue to be contacted or note that someone else in your opinion is being abused online or by phone, please speak up. Potential MEC and DOJ issues here.

No one should ever be made to feel intimidated because they choose to vote a certain way, by expressing an opinion or supporting a cause.

At this point, in order for this City to move forward, it's imperative that we insist upon and stringently enforce a much higher standard.

We have a concern about the Raytown Facebook group whose pro-tax Independence "owner" participated so aggressively in this past election.

She represents in the "rules" that the page is intended for Raytown citizens and business owners, then reiterates that the group is, in all caps, a "Local Raytown" "community page".

Although we have no direct experience with being blocked or censored as so many others have claimed, we have found that some of the posts from the organizer and her "assistants" to be at times rather forceful, abusive.

If indeed posts are being actively manipulated to conform with the "owner's" viewpoint, her group description should clearly indicate this.

It should be disclosed that any messages that don't reflect the "owner's" agenda will be subject to deletion, with the poster potentially being either silenced or permanently banned from the page.

"Raytown". "Community". Most if not all people that join the group would be initially unaware of any potential slanted dialog or intent.

Based upon what we've witnessed in the last couple years, in our opinion, we feel that the "owner" should adjust the page's description.

We feel that it's deceptive to imply that this group is a generic Raytown community page.

On August 10, Any Whiteman wrote "Raytown has needed a State Audit for 15 years. Someone needs to start a petition." The next day, someone answered him by writing, "Andy Whiteman that someone is you. The idea is right and you are the man to do it. Please get started with the petition drive. Raytown needs an audit more than any postage stamp township in the Western Hemisphere."

Great-just what we need-another out of towner telling us what to do! He and Susie should start their own club and stay out of Raytown.

Maybe Andy and Susie can help. It is clear the BOA is clueless.

Three hefty taxes at once, encouraging pro tax rubes to threaten and harass businesses and residents, and obscene mismanagement of tax dollars.

Hey Raytown gave crippling Tax Increment Financing to out of townees so what could hurt letting two out of townees run a petition audit drive.

"Maybe Andy and Susie can help."

Please refrain from using "Suz" and Andy in the same sentence.

Our apologies, Andy.

We don't believe that every member of the board is clueless. A few of them show differing degrees of promise, some via experience, some by level of industry, and a couple are are a fortuitous combo of both qualities. We look forward to their insight at the next council session.

C'mon council, let's see what ya got! Let's do this!

Just read a very disturbing story on one of our local face book page. Daughter in accident late last night, Saturday, Aug.11. When parents of one of the young adults in the accident asked our police to give an alcohol test and refused to do so because this individual is a bartender at one of our local bars, WHAT? Are you kidding me, we all know that some of our higher up have been know to attend our bars in town very frequently, this to me is pathetic... Don't tell me it's what it is going to be since we voted NO on taxes, I call B/S on that. We have money DO YOUR JOB ... If what I have read on Facebook is true, there are two mayor micahel mcdonoughs occupying one space. Last Tuesday he posted a sardonic mean-spirited rant in which he all but called raytowners a basket of deplorables. Someone should tell him, mike, it did not work for hillary,it will not work for you.

Then on Saturday he is before a small crowd at music event in downtown raytown. He is telling the people how we all need to move forward.

Which Mayor should we believe? The one that runs around attacking people publicly or the one calling for unity. It is time for you to make up your mind as to what kind of leader you are. Your four years as mayor is just about up. Time to look at the accomplishments.

Oops! There are not any. All you have done is divided our little city.

The following post. Put up by someone earlier today. Pretty much says it all.

Whoever posted the story of the car wreck should go outside of the City of Raytown for justice. Call the Jackson County Prosecutor's office. Check with the Jackson County Sheriff's department.

A post from a couple weeks back:
"I think you missed the part where they said you were dead wrong on all of your points. I have seen most of the guys when they come through my line at Hy-Ver and they seem to be in pretty good shape to me...So it’s not really fair to say they are well fed, or at least in my mind that means you are calling them fat. I follow them of Facebook and it seems they are always fighting fires so the title ambulance assistants seems off as well. Lastly as far as the level of their pay..,, I say good for them if they can be well paid, have great trucks and latest equipment all without raising taxes in the last 15 years. Not sure what agenda your trying to push here, but it sounds like that dog won’t hunt as grandpa used to say."

This poster remarked that she thought our firemen are always fighting fires...
Does anyone know if the RFPD issues incident reports on a daily or weekly basis?
The RPD does a fine job of informing us.
I would like to see the same from the RFPD.

Also, when I looked up the definition of well fed, it says nothing about being fat. It says having plenty of good food to eat. Don't be so touchy lady. No one is attacking the guys at the RFPD.

Raytown Citizens,

In taking a few days to digest the election results the people of Raytown diligently utilized their democratic rights and spoke and voted in large numbers against the 3 Tax questions placed before them to increase the operating revenues of the cities diminishing budget. While many agreed that the needs are justifiiably present, several glaring factors lead the voters to not support them at this time. Public trust with the elected officials to allocate the funds to the most glaring needs was a large prevalent objection as well as a fractured level of sentiment and overall BOA support for the ballot questions. I guess time will tell whether the public confidence can be regained with those elected officials who are in charge of the budget process annually. I would have thought that the last 2 years of major budget re-alignment to epic reduction levels with the culmination of the mandatory balanced budget submission last year would serve proof that this present group of BOA takes their fudiciary stewardship responsibilities pretty seriously. With most if not all of the class of 2015 Alderman not seeking re-election in 2019, the opportunity to regain trust and surface much needed revenue enhancement solutions will sit squarely on the remaining BOA members and the new Alderman’s shoulders to present to the citizens of Raytown for their approval.

Now to address a couple darts thrown my direction and as you know by now I have no issue tackling them head on. I don’t write “letters” to blog site providers to post or send out smoke signals in hopes it reaches it’s message destination. I’m a pick up the phone or better yet do an eyeball to eyeball guy. Call me old school I guess. I have ZERO next level political aspirations so let me get that out front and center! My longtime alliance to Raytown started long before I took the oath of office for Alderman in 2015 and will continue long after I step down in 2019. I’m not too concerned about stepping on a few “political toes” in my sworn duty to try improve the services and conditions for the community I as well live in, have a business in, and the citizens I diligently serve.

As the BOA embarks on yet another difficult budget process I strongly urge the citizen’s and stakeholders of our community to get engaged and make your thoughts and wishes known to your Alderman within your Ward. Demand open communication and timely follow up and make it known if you are not receiving it. While your viewpoints might not always line up or even be able to get accomplished, a professional level of engagement can and should be accomplished!

In closing I look forward to and plead for our community to heal and surge forward after a difficult and at times fracturing election cycle. One of the glaring positive qualities of our community is at the end of the day we all hopefully posses a huge passion and commitment for the betterment and future of Raytown. I look forward to working for this shared passion and if I can assist anyone please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Best Regards,

Steve Meyers

"...ignore the naysayers and those with personal agendas..."

Just our perception, but this statement reeks of paranoia.

Does anyone else find this type of talk from a mayor to be unacceptable?

We need a business owner or professional in office. Not "this".

Anonymous said...

"...naysayers...personal agendas..."

Has anyone ever noticed how little "digs" like these (that usually have no basis in fact) are always intentionally, precisely embedded in a much larger feel good, atta boy presentation?

Usually, this action is a direct reflection of the subconscious, a parcel of the mindset and daily behavior of a well-seasoned, perennial manipulator. This predilection is a component of their default operating system, so to speak.

This is why we urge everyone to carefully examine both sides of an issue.

Rely on your own feelings and evaluations, and no one else's. Not on friends, associates or social media consensus, and definitely NOT on the words of anyone elected to office.

You heard it here first folks, the City of Raytown is finalizing the contract tomorrow and will be disbanding Raytown EMS. This City will be contracting with American Medical Responce better known as AMR to provide the service. AMR is a for profit company that provides the lowest cost service using the lowest paid employees they can find. This means you will most likely never have the same person twice when calling 911 and it means god help you if you’re on a fixed income and cannot afford to pay the bill. The employees have been kept in the dark about all of this and are just now finding out they will soon be unemployed. This is a bad day for all of Raytown Folks

You don't get it. The opposition to the tax increases was led by those who are mad at the Board for cutting the police budget. This is thier way of getting even. They are being led by Tony Jacobs, who has a personal ax to grind with the police department. It has nothing to do with making Raytown better and every thing to do with punishing the mayor and the board because they cut the budget. I know it doesn't make sense, but take a good look at who is leading the charge. They have no sense.

You're correct. You're not making any sense.

Since this blog sems to be Ms. Mims preferred method to make a statement as opposed to speaking with me let me respond on such as a friend told me she decided to do so. Last year we were in a hard place with the budget, even after two previous years of cuts, the problems from numerous past decisions ballooned up which culminated in nearly 3 million in additional annual cuts. During this time, Mr. Barnes called me to express his concern and asked if there was “anything he can do to help” after I answered many of his questions concerning the budget. Fast forward to the separate tax issues, I sent Mr. Barnes an email wishing to meet with him and asked his position on the tax measures since he had such great interest the previous fall. He responded back that he was not taking a position on the measure since he had campaigning to do for re-election. I responded back expressing my desire to meet with him and discuss the measures and what they would mean to the city with my additional hope that we could discuss further avenues through his capacity at the state. He responded back agreeing to have breakfast or lunch. After that I responded wishing to set a date and I had no response, I responded two more additional times and was completely ignored. This was all JUST to set up a lunch and speak on the taxes and other options. After a month, Aldermen Steve Meyers knew of this interaction and posted a remark about such on facebook in which I commented as well. We did so in a public forum because frankly citizens need to be aware. I did such as I found it unfortunate that my elected representative decided to not take a position for or against because of his own re-election goals (running in practically uncontested primary and general) AND the fact that after committing to meet, he chose to completely ignore me, not leadership in my opinion. That was my frustration in which I expressed NOT bc he failed to endorse the questions as this blog seems to report several times. Unfortunately Ms. Mims has decided that instead of having a conversation about the source of such matters to publically make claims she frankly know little about. (Yes I have the emails). I’m happy Jerome is her friend but frankly I could care less who is friends with who and I’m sure the citizens could care less either. As always I will attempt to do what I feel is necessary FOR RAYTOWN, not political groups, allies or in an attempt gain notoriety. This is Raytown, not Jeff City, folks can watch the meetings for themselves and see what agenda if any particular aldermen may have. After this message I will refuse to speak publically about it again (other then the one facebook post mentioned above). As for Mr. Walters, this is not the first, second or third time you have failed to mention individuals in your story without reaching out for a statement, I would hope in the future in order to gain more legitimacy you would.

Regards,

Jason Greene

Tony Jacobs is a dedicated person trying earnestly to edify Raytowners on what is really happening in City Hall.

Please refrain from bad mouthing him. You pro taxers have to have somebody to blame other than your own putrid tax and spend selves.

When does Meyers, McDon'tknow and gang going to fess up and take credit for running the City into the ground. Thennnnn incredulously ask for three new taxes at once to refill their Slush Fund.

That's a really bold and serious statement to make saying that you know the city is definitely eliminating an entire department all at once. Contracting a major city service is not the kind of thing that just gets done over night. Or even a week for that matter. City's have rules on taking bids for services they pay for and I haven't seen or heard of them taking a bid for EMS services. This seems pretty unlikely, but for the sake of argument I'll play along.

Since contracting out services takes time and planning this would have been happening for at least a month.

That would mean they knew it was happening before the election and didn't tell anyone and got everyone involved at city hall to keep it a secret.

It would also mean they didn't take a public bid. (pretty sure thats not allowed)

It hasn't been reported on this blog or any of the Raytown social media pages and that means it probably wasn't discussed in a alderman meeting either.

Is the city capable of that? Would they do that to their employees? Would they keep a big financial deal like that a secret from the people? If it is true and all the people at city hall and the mayor and the alderman all kept it a secret from everyone who told you? These are rough times so it seems like kind of a dirty rumor to start since there are probably people at the city who are afraid of what might be coming.

I cannot say I’m suprised about AMR and there is no way the deal got done in the 6 days since the election. Make no mistake the City has this planned the whole time, but waited to make it pubic till after they had hopefully doubled their income. I thought it strange that through the whole election we heard nothing about EMS, we heard nothing about giving them some of the money to hire more employees. I cannot say I am impressed with EMS, but I like AMR even less. Somebody is going to have to explain it to me why the Fire Department doesn’t run our EMS like they do everywhere else

I won't support this board ever. we can hang on long enough to get rid of all of them. theyve displayed total betrayal and manipulative behavior. They act like they're such wise people with our best interest in mind. Their actions toward the public last fall are proof of how incompetent, arrogant and abusive they are. They...all of them...represent everything that's wrong with government. and I voted NO...a hard NO....on all tax requests.

To the anonymous comment to Steve Meyers. You're incorrect, some of those upset about the police budget being cut were involved in the vote yes momovement they didn't let feelings get in the way, and looked at the facts. The city doesn't have enough income coming in. Also, if you look at some of the vote no propaganda, and comments, a lot were anti police, and gave the impression the PD didn't need more money. Also, many were based on BOA possibly not doing things right years ago.

Gather 'round everyone!

Put on 'yer boots. We have us some deep hokem to wade through.

Prior to the recent election, it was documented that someone involved in the pro-tax movement attempted to intimidate an area donut shop owner after the donut shop owner ventured to express their opinion about the tax vote.

Cut to the present, approximately one, two weeks later.

An amateur Raytown videographer, a proponent of all those property taxes, decides that it's time to video review...you guessed it!...a local donut shop chain!

A donut shop.

A coinkydink?

We don't think so.

Now let's examine the opportunities that this opened up for him and his pro-tax compadres:

The so-called videographer now claims that patrons and supporters of the original donut shop are now "harassing" HIM for making the video about the second donut shop. He's "calling out" the people that think that it's okay to "intimidate" others.

Like clockwork, the "Un-" person, an early Raytown pioneer of the lop-sided "full-on social media assault", predictably materializes and inserts their two cents. They go on and on at length, listing the numerous donut alternatives that are available to this area's modern consumer. So many options! They're both careful however not to use the "B-word". (Boycott.)

I'd laugh hysterically if this behavior wasn't so pathetic. And obvious. And transparent.

Now let's all observe a moment of silence and light a candle for this victim.

Interesting comments Mr. Meyers. I read through them once and then again to see if you had renounced the actions of you, Ward 2 Alderman Jason Greene and City Collector Kathy Schutte's blatant attempt to publicly bully State Representative Jerome Barnes for not following your instructions to endorse the tax increases. Mr. Barnes did not endorse, and, he did not oppose the tax increases.

But that was not good enough for the three musketeers of Raytown. Instead you took to you favorite forum, Raytown Unleashed, and unfairly attacked Mr. Barnes.

It is good of you to write the community needs to "heal and surge forward". You might want to start with the man in the mirror. Your letter is conflicted and torn between what you call for and the very different way you conducted yourself during the campaign.

A simple apology may not seem like a "surge forward" to you, but it would definitely be a change in direction many in Raytown would recognize as a sincere effort to heal wounds.

You may want to talk to your partners, Greene and Schutte, and ask them to take the same step. It would be one of those moments in which actions would speak much louder than your words.

Steve Meyers is right about one thing. Most of the Board of Aldermen elected in 2015 will probably not seek re-election in 2019. After the thumping they took last Tuesday that should come as no surprise. I sincerely hope Michael McDonough joins that list of those who will not seek re-election. He fooled when me he ran in 2015. He will not fool me again. His tenure of Mayor has been one of division and without progress for Raytown. It is time for him to go.

I wish I had the control over people to sway them... or maybe not. I did not talk to more than 120 people at their door, only 3 precincts at the same poll, and I only had about 1200 unique visitors to the site. That's way less than the pro-tax movement. perhaps i swayed 50 voters, perhaps. but i think i didn't even do that. Just as members of the Board are able to make up their own mind, so are members of the larger community.
Anywho, i agree to lets heal and surge forward. how about for the next month the comments here and elsewhere be not attacks or setups for nov/april, but about improving our community, lets discuss issues brought up during the budget hearings. Lets not attack the hearings or have gotcha moments, but seek to address and alleviate concerns. I will work with anyone for a better Raytown, just as i did during last years budget.
I will have a review of this years budget but will make it publicly available for discussion, and I have initiated the State Audit process (signature pledge info to follow). This will help your community feel more secure in trusting our fiduciaries as well as our processes. In addition, I strongly hope the Board puts a 3rd class city measure on Nov ballot, unless it can get approved in the next 2 meetings(ha). The only differences are petition initiatives and recall, explain why those are bad things?
Thanks for your time.

Alderman Meyers, Are you the same non letter writer who wrote into The Raytown Tribune "letter to the editor" several times before and after your election?
The people spoke against their confidence more than just to the Board. Even with massive cuts by the Board, the Chief and McDoughnut still figured out how to mismanage and scare off our officers. They give special treatment to owners of bars and former police officers/mayors. I believe more voters could have been convinced if we didn't have jimmy and mikey running up the overtime. You tried warning everyone this was coming months before and yet PD kept sending officers on lavish family trips, and didn't prepare for the coming cuts. Take it less on a reflection of you, and more a reflection of the PD.

Anonymous said...

Jason; if that show you respond to people i wouldn't call you back either, you seem unstable, did losing the state race make you want some vengeance or are you preparing for another run? When the mayor doesnt return my calls i dont blast him on social media. of course i have more restraint and respect for myself than that. as for watching meetings to see where people agenda lies. we know yours! last year you tried to cut from ll other areas to give the PD more money. YOU had ems get less money for more promised officers that fled to others better depts. You fought for them to keep STEP increases while the rest of the city cut COLA, and YOU approved raises. It seems YOUR agenda is to break the city so the chief can keep getting more money for 800 dollar boors and 25000 office furniture. We see you.

@9:04 PM "why throw darts".
1. The Board and Mayor mismanaged our money.
2. The Board and Mayor tried to con us to vote in a slush fund.
3. The Board and Mayor tried to pass Three NEW taxes at once.
4. The Board and Mayor do not know the people they represent.
5. The Board and Mayor have not denounced the harassment and threats
to residents and businesses who expressed their freedom of
speech.
6. The Board and Mayor have not been transparent.
7. The Board and Mayor have not been responsive to the will and real
needs of the people.

These a few reasons to throw darts at the mud slinging Aldermen and their cronies. Do you need the long list of why they have failed their office and lost the public trust and faith.

Why were motorcycles necessary again? not only are they a major expensive the city lost a lot of money trying to auction or maybe sell them, but they were just another excuse for officers to play and have fun on taxpayer dime. with 2 speeding tickets written per day and more than one officer on traffic duty, makes one wonder if they were traveling on pacific coast highway with them, because they surely weren't using them for their intended purpose.

As for the video guy, he just wants attention and views. ignore his post and he will go away again into the hole of which he came. Same with unleashed, stay subscribed, but just let their clique post and it'll die down. there's several other raytown groups including the new raytown round up- i'm sure out of towner will try and squeeze her way into that one too as a "power admin" remember this is the same company who said they let russia use them to sway elections even now!

Anonymous said...

They were used for enforcement, escorts of parades, dignitaries etc. definitely more than two tickets a day were written. They are an excellent enforcement tool. But they were suspended in use when the body cameras were suspended due needing more server space and the council not approving it. The on-bike cameras didn’t last due to vibrations. But there’s no traffic unit now so it doesn’t matter.

"The Board and Mayor have not denounced the harassment and threats to residents and businesses who expressed their freedom of speech."

Good point. A basic function of their existence in office should be to denounce these behaviors. They're supposed to "lead", after all. For a few of them, this doesn't even cross their minds, because in one form or another they're probably out and about 24/7 indulging in the same activity. It's just how they roll, and always will.

For this and every other reason you mentioned, August 15, 2018 at 8:05 AM, they all need to go as each of their terms expire.

When do the Protaxers display humility and honor the will of the people?

When do the Protaxers accept that they offered as flawed set of NEW tax initiatives that was soundly rejected by the people from whom they draw their power to govern??

Savvy Politicians have always known that those elected officials that refuse to do the will of the people do so at their own political peril.

Most of the Raytown aldermen lack even the rudimentary wisdom to remain in office. As long as they do not call for a stop to the castigation of those who voted their conscience against their ill advised tax initiatives; they demonstrate that they are double failures as representatives.

Common sense and decency demands the BOA denounce those tax supporters that are trying to smear those who opposed the tax. Until they do there is no going forward.

Your house is divided and recriminations on the very people who put you in office and pay for the government you provide can not right the ship of fools who set out to con the people into voting for a slush fund for the BOA.

Take heed less once again you fetch up hard on the rocky shore of public mistrust.

Anonymous said...

Many people are upset with the BOA's refusal to denounce the attacks on the citizens and businesses that opposed the Slush Fund aka triple taxationathon.

On a positive note. We are already receiving money now from these same ignored citizens to oppose the next round of multiple NEW tax initiatives.

We know the BOA is not listening so we are forced to get funding started for the next round of Raytown games called "Fleece the People".

You would think the BOA would do a critical self assessment and reflect on the wisdom of the electorate. Go figure.

Anonymous said...

"When do the Protaxers accept that they offered as flawed set of NEW tax initiatives that was soundly rejected by the people from whom they draw their power to govern??"

I truly believe that just a very tiny, extra mouthy group of wannabes has been behind all this pre- and post-vote acrimony. These citizens don't have much of anything else going on. They have something lacking in their lives. They're "wowed" by the attention that they receive by certain city officials...when they're doing the bidding of the of said city officials, that is. There's a palpable sense of desperation with a few of these citizens.

Of course the City people need as many mouthpieces as possible to advance their agendas. These citizens are willing to throw aside common sense and equitable behavior in exchange for the ability to simply hob knob. They'd rather feel a sense of importance or power versus accepting the responsibility to truly comprehend the issues and to sincerely effect real change.

Any unbiased empirical undertaking would likely confirm that the sycophant to elected city official ratio in Raytown alarmingly exceeds those of other communities.

And when you factor in several sub-par elected city officials, well...

1. Donuts: those are veiled "positive posts". The original intent of those posts is anything but "positive". No worries though. They'll grow weary of the donut thing and will discover new and exciting ways of attention seeking next week.

2. Fast food: Almost comical, isn't it? :-) I can't imagine that the fast food experience is confined to Raytown. It's probably a sign that we need to cook at home, or if we're too busy, gobble a handful of healthy pecans.

3. School enrollment: apparently this is a significant issue and warrants discussion. Gosh, back in the day we simply showed up and sat down. Apparently it's now a multi-step ordeal.

I see Mayor McDonough has decided to slide on down the slippery slope of negative politics.

At last Tuesday's city council meeting he thrashed out against the nay sayers. Doesn't he get it? His plans to force three unfair tax increases on Raytown voters backfired, and backfired really big. He relied upon a small bubble of friends to spread its poisonous message to the voters backfired. It was about a week before the election that he and his groupies decided to go negative. On a facebook page the attacked their perceived enemies of the state, the Raytown Democrat Association, Greg Walters and his Raytown Report, and a group named No New Taxes instead of focusing on the issues.

Henry Carner of No New Taxes said it best when he said, “We decided early on to stick strictly to the tax issue questions and to leave personalities out of the campaign”.

Way to go, despite the oppositions penchant for name calling, you guys stuck to your battle plan and won the day. Congrats to the RDA, Greg and No New Taxes on a job well done informing the voters of the deeply flawed tax questions put forward Mayor McDonough and his cohorts.

I guess I need some help in understanding the the statement #1 from 8-15- 8:05AM regarding how the Mayor and BOA mismanaged our Money? This was the same board that last year finally said enough is enough and stopped dipping into crucial reserves to supplement some bloated departments. It appears that message was loud and clear as I understand the PD and Public Works depts submitted very reasonable and similar budget requests on Tuesday nights from those that were re-aligned last year. So please feel free to enlighten us on your statement please.

Anonymous said...

@9:42 AM August 16, 2018 from 8:05 AM. Please pay attention now. The absolute irrefutable proof that any Mayor and municipal legislative body has mismanaged the citizens money is when the Mayor and legislative body votes to propose three NEW hefty tax initiatives at once.

Selecting two departments that "submitted very reasonable and similar budget requests" (especially after the taxpayers have spoken) does not obviate the preexisting fiscal failure that under pins the obscene and flawed attempt to bilk the citizens with three NEW taxes to create a slush fund.

As for a "loud and clear message" that was sent on August 7th. The citizens screamed Raytown's governing body are not trusted to mismanage even more money.

I don't know who the us is in your post. Just possibly the "us" is Citizens for Progress, the City Hall cliche, the Chamber, the wannabe sycophants or Raytown Unhinged. At any rate I am glad I could help expand your or "us" horizons and enhance your or "us" perspective.

"I'm anonymous in fear of relentless online attacks. I'll own that. Why are you?"

That's an easy one.

Some of us have been around long enough to know that an elected individual will hold a grudge if they're even so much as mildly contradicted or their behavior questioned. Their "proclivity" was "outted" years ago, they're already irrelevant and they aren't taken that seriously, however. Most of us have decided to simply bide our time until he's kicked out of office by the voters. The comments and behavior from his smidgen of online supporters should be under review and responded if we feel that their behavior crosses a line. We should be able to state OUR opinions that we're uncomfortable with their remarks.

As recently as yesterday, a local wingnut with far too much time on his hands literally spent a few days subtly going after a Raytown business owner online after her opinion differed from his on the recent tax questions. She's never spoken a cross word online to or about this individual. When his behavior was brought into question, he claimed that her various "supporters" were "harrassing" him, although he didn't or couldn't substantiate anything. And the business owner was in control of her patron's opinions how? Was she actually instructing people to harass him? Pluuuze. A local alderman actually appeared to be amused by his behavior.

Two examples...and there are dozens more.

Publish our name?! No thank you.

Numerous elected officials need to be replaced, and we need to continue to challenge anyone that is continuously abusive online to others.

While your platitudes are great in theory, this Facebook person has probably come around to realizing that their perennial blips of nasty behavior have severely impacted the effectiveness of their agenda. Reputation Management 101 may be the actual reason for any stated course correction.

When is Lynch going to organize the department accordingly? We need a newly elected Marshall and why don't the BOA look at appointing a police Chief to do the job.
