Pickle
Ball is a popular sport that has been sweeping America the past few years. It
has established itself in many communities in the metropolitan area, including
Raytown, and is growing in popularity.
Here
are the basics of the game:
- A fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong.
- Played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly modified tennis net.
- Played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes.
- Played as doubles or singles.
Pickle Ball enthusiasts find the
sport enjoyable and a perfect fit for all ages. Unlike many sports, Pickleball
is inexpensive to play. All you need is a paddle (best described as an
over-sized ping pong paddle), a pickle ball, and, of course, a court to play
on, and you are set for loads of fun with the benefit of a healthy work out.
Area cities have incorporated Pickle
Ball Courts into their park system. Raytown has drawn the court lines for pickleball
users on some of its tennis courts. The tennis net and pickleball nets are the
same height.
It may not be long before the
Raytown Park Board takes the next step by creating Pickle Ball courts
constructed specifically for the popular sport.
Discussions have been held with
Raytown Park Board Director Dave Turner for the creation of stand-alone courts
for the popular sport.

RAYTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS IT WRONG
Like many of the readers of the Raytown Report I found
the speech School Board member Rick Thode gave at a recent School Board meeting
to be enlightening. The video we linked to of the meeting via YouTube was also
interesting. While reviewing the video I noticed a message flashed at the very
beginning of the YouTube video.
Here is what is written . . .
This video is made available to increase public access
to Board of Education business. The video may be
edited for time and content as determined by the
District. For full access to Board of Education
meetings, the public may attend the meetings as
scheduled or request a copy of the official
minutes from the meeting.

District. For full access to Board of Education
meetings, the public may attend the meetings as

minutes from the meeting.
To say the least, the statement is very interesting. It
starts off sounding pretty noble.
However, It goes downhill quickly after that point. The
short message reads the content may be edited for time and content. Should the
public want to learn more, they should attend the meeting, by golly! Or, the
public can request a copy of the official minutes of the meeting.
One cannot help but wonder if the written minutes will,
in turn, be redacted.
The School District has it all wrong. School District patrons (aka, the taxpayers) have a right, as guaranteed by the Missouri Sunshine Law, to know what transpires at public meetings of the Raytown School Board.
The whole idea behind broadcasting such meetings is to inform,
not hide information from the public. The District should not censor video of
their meetings . . . period.
The repulsive message at the beginning of the video
should be removed. The Missouri Sunshine Law should be followed, not danced
around.
Saturday night saw rapidly dropping temperatures
after a beautiful day. What better than to fire up the chimenia to keep guests
comfortable for a night of conversation and visiting.

The Raytown Parks & Rec used to offer Pickleball. It never became popular in Raytown. And before you say they offered Pickleball before it became popular in the area, it was offered around the same time that North Kansas City was building the Chicken-N-Pickle. The Parks Board decided to put in Disk Golf instead.
There is a very successful pickleball court north of the river and several pickleball venues are under construction in Johnson County.
I checked the city newsletter I received a couple of weeks ago to see if there was any pickleball news but there wasn't.
It looks like a lot of fun and I would like to play.
I think you should repost Rick Thodes comments this week. They must have been posted late last week. I think we should call a member or two of the school board and encourage them to hire auditors. The cost should be well worth it, especially if he's already done the digging and just needs review.
The basketball court at Coleman is about the same size as pickle ball, and I could see a large reduction in gun crime surrounding them if they were switched over. Plus people would actually be able to use them since the gang that "rents" the courts rarely lets others play when they are there.
I have never played pickleball but it does look like fun. I haven't seen any large groups playing frisbee golf anywhere. Perhaps the park board made a mistake it that is the direction they thought things were going. I can tell you I have seen people waiting in line to play pickle ball on one of our park's tennis courts.
If it is popular everywhere else it will be popular here. Looks like a no-brainer to me. Give pickle ball a chance. I know I will.
Next Tuesday, just say "NO" to higher sales tax!
Vote NO on the parks tax, they already have over a million dollars and aren't repairing any of the parks!
We need better roads and more police, not more flowers in the median.
Wow they are really pressing this tax. They want flowers and signs. If they spent all this money on cameras, fixing the tennis courts, the pond wall, potholes, or police we'd be a lot further along.
This a NO INCREASE Renewal Sales Tax ballot issue that comes back in front of voters every 10 years.

That is incorrect.
This is a RENEWAL of the tax.
Your sales taxes will NOT increase.
@834, every ten years? Why does this say 5 years?
Perhaps there's more of this ballot issue you don't understand...
What business and individuals in Raytown is suing the county to keep the trail out of Raytown?
Get out the hip boots when someone tells you a tax will not increase it is just a renewal.
How many of you fell for that line from the school district, and we all know that there was an increase they just didn't want us to know.
The guy behind the increase is still superintendent!
How many times has the city told us where money would be spent to find it is being spent on other things.
The guy behind asking for the sales tax renewal knows they are setting on all kinds of money and not spending a dime!
Just say "NO" to more taxes!
The tennis courts at Kenagy Park are striped for Pickleball. The park board is taking bids to refurbish those tennis courts and the pickleball striping will be replaced. You should be able to play pickleball at Kenagy Park late next summer.
