Park Del / Village Green Meeting Meeting Draws 

Large Crowd

Last Saturday approximately 20 Raytowners gathered for a ZOOM Meeting to discuss improvements to security at Colman Park and other parks within the Raytown Park system.

The meeting was the brainchild of Khadijah Hardaway, Mindy McDaniel and Greg Walters. There purpose was to gather support for addressing the violence at Colman Park that culminated in the shooting of two young people last week at the park. Other parks were discussed as well. Most notably Kenagy

 Park. 

The meeting, which lasted two and one half hours drew a crowd of approximately 20 participants. Ms. Hardaway, who is the Lead Organizer for Justice for Wyandotte, the movement (hosted by Broadway Church, KCMO), and the Social Action Chair for Grant Chapel African Methodist Church, moderated the meeting. 

Mindy McDaniel was appointed Secretary of the group.

Also in attendance were Park Board member Michael Anderson, Candidates for Raytown Alderman Jayne Loulos, Tony Jacob, and Bonnaye Mims.

Alderman Greg Walters was also in attendance. He reported that the Park Board is seriously considering the following improvements at Colman Park.

CONSIDERATIONS PLANNED BY RAYTOWN PARKS AND RECREATION:

• Continuation of nightly patrols by private security service to enforce curfews in Raytown Parks.
• Upgrading Replacing all existing lights along Lane Street with lighting twice as bright as currently in use. Adding two spot lights designed to beam across the park from west to east to illuminate the park area.
• Closing off the parking area adjacent between the dumpsters and the Park Maintenance Garage. This enclosed area would not be open to the public for parking. This change will affect three homes.
• Build speed bumps across Lane Street to slow down speeders and reckless drivers.

 RECOMMENDATINS REQUESTED BY PARK DEL / VILLAGE GREEN:

• Shut the electricity off to power outlets in shelter houses at the beginning of curfew.
• Leave the lights on at the shelter houses throughout the night.
• Place additional cameras to be used to prosecute curfew violators in court.
• Place highly visible signs clearly stating park rules and the use of surveillance cameras in the park.
• At the start of curfew, have a licensed police presence in the park to assist private security to enforce the starting of curfew.
• A discussion of changing to changing curfew to 9:00 p.m. during winter hours.
• A discussion of changing curfew to 10:00 p.m. during summer hours.
