The picture shown is the result of recent heavy rains in Raytown. The manhole cover pictured is located at 59th and Raytown Trafficway. The two streets converge at the lowest point of the two roads. The manhole serves as a failsafe to keep the storm sewer pipes from being damaged by excessive water pressure. The overflow from the manhole cover is directed east on 59th Street into street inlet to carry off the excess water.

The public is invited to attend a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the stadium will be followed by a reception at the Raytown Chamber of Commerce headquarters at 12:00 noon. Chamber headquarters is located at 59th and Raytown Road.

Aftermath of a Tragedy
An explosion last week at a home in the Raytown has left a man dead and three people injured. Authorities are warning the public not to attempt to make their own fireworks, which they suspect as the cause of the detonation.

“Unfortunately, we’ve seen this before in Kansas City, way too many times,” said John Ham, spokesman of the Kansas City office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).

"We lose fingers, we lose hands, we have fatalities every year that are — tragically — easily preventable,” continued Ham.

"This has gone from a sad event to a tragic event," Ham said. “Fireworks are unstable by nature because when you light them, you want them to go off and explode. For somebody to try and make them themselves – either mixing chemicals or buying consumer fireworks and trying to take the powder out of those – unfortunately this can be the result.”

A woman suffered broken bones in her back and one of her legs. One of four children saved from the wreckage is suffering from two broken legs.

Her 3-year-old son also suffered from two broken legs. Other children in the house suffered minor injuries, a concussion, cuts and bruises.

Raytown Road at Intersection of Missouri 350 to Close
Starting July 6th, Raytown Road will be closed eastbound and westbound at Missouri 350 as crews work on overhead traffic signals. At the intersection of Missouri 350 and Raytown Road both northbound and southbound traffic must turn right.

The detour for northbound Raytown Road is to turn left onto Walmart Drive and then left again onto Missouri 350 westbound. To detour southbound on Raytown Road, turn right onto Gregory Boulevard, then left onto Missouri 350 eastbound.

The project should be completed in about four weeks, weather dependent. There could be a lane reduction on Missouri 350 between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. nightly.

Overheard from the table next to us today: "Got an emergency? Call 911." If you are lucky you will get a policeman answering the call. If you are unlucky you will get a social work using money originally meant to hire a policeman!

Things are so messed up. Am I the only one still hearing fireworks at night. This is July 10th. Put those noise makers away until next year people. Your one night of madness has come and gone.

What a tragedy, and for what? Really, my heart goes out to the families and loved ones of the people involved. It's just sad that the celebration of our "independence" has turned into 3 weeks of seeing how much noise we can make. With a few exceptions most of our holidays have turned into excuses to be rude, or to drink too much, or both. How much different would this story have been if the same explosion had been a little bigger, and killed another neighbor in another house? Fireworks... are a complete waste of time, money, and in this case, someone's life.
