The World Cup comes to Raytown's

northern doorstep . . . just a quarter

of a mile from Raytown City Limits

Raytown’s city limit is just a quarter mile from

Arrowhead Stadium where some games will be

played, it places our city in a unique position. It

gives us an opportunity to clean up our city in anticipation of guests we will undoubtedly be receiving once the tournament begins.

We have all seen the result of some of this effort.

New traffic curbs and trees have been built and planted at Rayown's largest monument

entrance located at 63rd Street and Blue Ridge Cutoff on the west side of our city.

The Chamber of Commerce and has taken the lead in preparing the business community for visitors to our city who will undoubtedly be showing up within a week of the first game.

We are also aware of those who take up the burden of picking up litter on our major streets. My puppy dog Wickett and I regularly lend a hand on our daily walks through our adjoining neighborhoods by picking up after those who believe the world is their waste basket.

No doubt there are many more examples of Raytowner’s stepping up to clean-up our city and make it shine like a new penny!

What is Wrong

with this Picture?

Something we noticed is pictured on the right. The photo pretty much tells the tale. An electrica extension cord stretches out from the front door of one of a business, and then a “double wide” side walk in Downtown Raytown.

It reaches its terminus at a parking spot in Downtown Raytown's infamous diagonal parking strip on 63rd Street.

The balloon is one of those tall balloons the inflates and deflates as doing a dance in the middle of the parking spot in which it sits

Not sure it this is effective advertising. But we do recognize a pedestrian hazard and a traffic violation when we see one.

While on the subject, we can also see the remnants of parking lanes painted on Raytown’s only diagonal parking of a public street.

It is well known most Raytowners do not like diagonal parking. The fact that it was designed for vehicles to pull into backwards only adds insult to injury.

It makes us wonder, “Why this throwback to an era from the mid 20th Century is still in place in Downtown Raytown?”

We are now in the 16th year of the 21st Century. Many of the SUV's and Large Pick Up trucks

traveling our streets will not easily fit into the diagonal parking spaces.

Here is a thought. Perhaps the Main Street Association and even City Hall should take a look at revamping the parking from "diagonal to parallel parking on Downtown Raytown's busiest Street.

As for the tournament and nearly everyone’s favorite (Argentina) being the one to watch. No doubt, they are a good team. As for predictions of Argentina sweeping its games . . . my only words are, “watch the English”. It has been 60 years since the British have won the World Cup. More reason to celebrate if they find their way this year!
