Holding Leadership Accountable:
A Response to Mayor Mike's Closing Comments
BY TRUTH WATCH
At last night’s Board of Aldermen meeting, Mayor Mike used his closing remarks to complain about citizens who voice concerns regarding the Raytown Quality School District—specifically those pointing out struggling academic performance scores. He claimed that airing these grievances places a negative light on the school district, much like complaints about municipal issues reflect negatively on the city, ultimately hindering our ability to attract new residents and businesses.
While the Mayor is entitled to his opinion, his logic misses the mark entirely. If Mayor Mike is looking for the root cause of Raytown’s image problem, he does not need to look at concerned citizens—he simply needs to look in the mirror.
Leadership by Outburst, Not Governance
The negative headlines, attorney fees, and potential future payouts tied to the Alderman Thomas fiasco lie squarely on Mayor Mike’s shoulders and his failure to follow state law. That incident made the news and cast a negative light on Raytown, but the true damage was caused by his choice of response.
Anyone who regularly watches Board of Aldermen meetings has witnessed the Mayor's frequent negative outbursts. Instead of maintaining the professional neutrality required of an officer presiding over the dais, Mayor Mike frequently makes himself the center of attention.
He repeatedly interrupts aldermen who disagree with his positions and—even worse—verbally attacks and ridicules residents who have the courage to step up to the podium during public comment.
This childish, bullying behavior from our highest elected official does not protect Raytown’s reputation; it actively suppresses public participation and creates a toxic breach between government and the citizens it is sworn to serve.
Public Safety and the Blind Eye on Crime
When Mayor Mike frequently cites his background as a Raytown High graduate and his 40-plus-year career with the Raytown Police Department, it raises a fair question: Is this where his definition of acceptable leadership was formed?
Consider our local public safety record. Despite an alarming rate of ongoing violent incidents and shootings linked to adult venues and nightclubs near Raytown Plaza, effective enforcement remains absent. In April 2025, the city passed a public nuisance ordinance specifically designed to address problematic businesses. Yet, violent criminal activity persists while the city turns a blind eye.
This inaction leaves residents asking a troubling question: Is the city prioritizing sales tax revenue over public safety?
Victim-Blaming Students, Ignoring Code Enforcement, and Deflecting in Schools
Rather than addressing why academic performance standards are lagging, Mayor Mike chose to point fingers at the victims—the students—and blame low scores on Raytown's "transient population."
This deflection ignores two critical realities
* Rental Property Oversight: If transience and rental conditions impact neighborhood stability, the blame falls directly back on city hall. Years ago, an ordinance was passed to hold rental properties to strict code standards. Rather than improving living conditions for families, enforcement appears to have become an exercise in filling city coffers while property violations go unaddressed.
* School Safety and Bullying: The Mayor conveniently avoided discussing one of the most pressing crises in our schools: systemic bullying. Following the tragic shooting of a local sophomore near Raytown Plaza earlier this school year, parents have demanded answers regarding whether school-based bullying played a role.
Instead of opening a dialog, the School Board continuously refuses to allow public comments on bullying, while the Superintendent writes letters attacking parents who record conversations on school grounds related safety concerns. Restrictive public policies are being put in place to stifle parents rather than fix the culture inside the classrooms.
