An Unsettling Pattern

Last week we published guest editorial from Richard Tush, in it he covered information on the candidates for the School Board election and mentioned those who had not responded to attempts to contact three of the candidates.

It is understandable being that the group Mr. Tush is associated with is a political club and perhaps these candidates felt they didn't share the views and positions of the organization.  We have spoken to others and learned over the years Mr. Tush has allowed anyone to speak in non-partisan races, like the School Board.

We were contacted since the election that many of the same candidates that didn't responded to Mr. Tush and the Raytown Democratic Association decided not to respond to those at the Beacon.  We recommend you read the piece from the Beacon to decide for yourself if it is time to hold those who don't feel they need to responded to those they represent by calling them out when seen in public and a NO vote in their next election efforts. In its coverage of the election(s) in Blue Springs and Raytown the Beacon wrote the following:

"The Beacon received just one candidate response from each district, so we are combining their answers.

In Blue Springs, incumbent Bobby Hawk is a parent and lead pastor. The Beacon attempted to reach Nick Bleess, Will Hecht and incumbent Rhonda Gilstrap through Facebook messages sent to their campaign pages but received no responses.

In Raytown, incumbent Natalie Johnson-Berry is a longtime teacher and parent. The Beacon could not find reliable contact information for Edith Marsalis, Michael Watson or Alexis Christopher. We attempted to reach incumbent Bobbie Saulsberry through her Facebook campaign page but did not receive a response".

Two Private Citizens Step Up . . .
The night the Board approved placing the three tax increases on the ballot two public speakers came forward to give their opinion.

Those two speakers, Jeanette Gentry and Ryan Hoffman, expressed their concern that the proposed tax burden would be place too much burden on the elderly, young families, and retired military who make Raytown their home.

They asked the Board to consider lowering the amount of money tax increase requested be cut in half so taxpayers could afford the added financial tax burden.

Only three Aldermen responded to Gentry and Hoffman’s comments.

Alderman Greg Walters said their ideas had merit and that he would support lowering the proposed increase amount.

Aldermen Bill and Mary Jane VanBuskirk clearly spoke against Question Three. Question Three doubles the amount the city currently collects in property taxes. It does not guarantee how the additional money would be spent.

The rest of the Board said nothing. Within half an hour, the majority of the Board voted to approve placing the three property tax increases on the ballot.

HOW THEY VOTED / QUESTION ONE: Shall the City of Raytown, Missouri issue its general obligation bonds in the amount not to exceed $46,000,000.00 . . .

YES:    MYERS, AZIERE, MIMS, B. VANBUSKIRK, MJ VAN BUSKIRK, HAYDEN, WARD
            EMERSON, SCOTT
NO:      WALTERS

HOW THEY VOTED / QUESTION TWO: Shall the City of Raytown, Missouri issue its general obligation bonds in the amount not to exceed $7,200,000.00 . . .

YES:    MYERS, AZIERE, MIMS, B. VANBUSKIRK, MJ VAN BUSKIRK, HAYDEN, WARD
            EMERSON, SCOTT
NO:      WALTERS

HOW THEY VOTED / QUESTION THREE: Shall there be a $0.30 cent increase in tax levy on one hundred dollars valuation for general municipal purposes in the City of Raytown, Missouri?

QUESTION THREE DOUBLES THE CURRENT PROPERTY TAX LEVY IN RAYTOWN

YES:    MYERS, AZIERE, MIMS, HAYDEN, WARD, EMERSON, SCOTT
NO:      BILL VanBUSKIRK, MJ VanBUSKIRK, WALTERS

The three property tax levy increases are scheduled to be voted on the Missouri State Primary Election, August 2, 2022.

Homeless Camp is gone . . .
and cleaned up!

One month ago we published a story about the remains of a homeless camp located just east of Aldi's on 350 Highway. The property is owned by the City of Raytown.

PHOTO FROM ORIGINAL STORY
We are pleased to report the tent has been removed and all the debris and trash that surrounded the tent has been cleaned up as well.

Anyone who is aware of a homeless camp in Raytown is urged to call Mr. Matt Cushman of he Raytown Fire Protection District. Mr. Cushman's title is that of a "Community Paramedic". He is responsible in finding permanent shelter for homeless in Raytown.

Mr. Cushman asked that we publish his phone number (816-737-6035) for people to call if they come upon what may be a homeless situation or call the police at 911 if it is an emergency situation.

Is it me or is the city once again wasting our money.

With in the last couple of days I have noticed a blank and light blue SUVs. Both with the city name and logo but are very hard to see. It is like the city doesn't want us to know who they are. Maybe the city employees are embarrassed to work for the city and asked our great and wise city administrator to have the signs in a color that makes them hard to identify. It is as the bright mind that decided on that sign at city hall.

More of a joke and all a waste of money.

Thank you for explaining to others why we don't need higher taxes just higher intelligence.

*****BREAKING NEWS*****

New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) have a majority control of seats on the Raytown Board of Alderman. Since April of 2017 the NFFA has been working to purge low income, seniors and others on fixed income from the city limits. Their weapons of choice have been and continue to be higher fees and taxes. They first launched their attack using major fee increases as fees do not have the required oversight and voter approval required for new and/or increased taxes thanks to the Hancock protection in MO.

In August of 2018, the NFFA put forth an aggressive effort of three tax increases, which would to either increase existing taxes or force new taxes upon the citizens. When these taxes failed, they realized the need to regroup and reformulate their efforts. April 2019 and the changing of Raytown to an elected police chief launched the raise of Raytown's Young Ambitious Nemesis and full throttle forward on new/increased fees and taxes.

In November of 2019, the NFFA celebrated extending taxes for the parks and extra money spent for a special election. Their leadership took this as a major victory, but failed to comprehend the parks are something everyone enjoys. The ongoing "spend it before it burns a hole in your pocket" mentality would only make a teenager who received their first pay check proud and anger those who struggle to stay afloat like those they seek to purge: low income, seniors and others on fixed income.

The NFFA under the leadership of Raytown's Young Ambitious Nemesis once again placed a special ballot question in Nov 2021 that passed because the citizens where promised this special tax for online purchases would fix our streets, ensure snow removal, and increase police officers. Was the celebration over passing a new tax or wasting tax dollars on a special election without the citizens complaining about the waste?

Those in Raytown now in a rapid movement in early March of this year by the NFAA and under the leadership of Raytown's Young Ambitious Nemesis face three tax questions that if pass will purge the very blood life of this city. Home owners and business alike will find themselves forced to relocate to other communities. This will leave Raytown nearly all rental community with more vacant business than Detroit.

Join the resistance by registering to vote today, and voting in Aug to stop Raytown's Young Ambitious Nemesis and the NFAA's purge!

Dear April 13th at 2:46 pm

I agree with you fully! What small businesses that are left will close up and you won't be able to sell your house in Raytown if these taxes pass. We need new leadership from the mayor on down. Raytown will be the next "ghost town"!

While out for lunch today I overheard there are members of the BOA that belive they dictate rates and other expectations of customers service on private businesses.

Who can I call or otherwise find out if this is true?

The mayor is showing all the new, remodeled small businesses that has opened up on 350 hwy on his Face Book page. Let's just see how many are still open after doubling our real estate taxes on businesses in Raytown come August 2nd for the Go Bonds to fix our streets. I would rather have gravel streets, (we almost have them now anyway), than see these small businesses go out of business and see how many vacant homes there will be in Raytown if this tax passes. You think city hall is hurting for money, just you wait!! VOTE NO!!
