Festival of the Trails a Huge Success

RICE TREMONTI HOME

It has been just over a week since Raytown participated in the Festival of the Trails commemorating 200 years of the Santa Fe Trail. Anyone who attended the multi-site event in Raytown will tell you that it was a huge success.

Participation by Raytowners and others who traveled to the Raytown area explains the large crowds who Cave Spring Park, the Rice-Tremonti Home and the Raytown Historical Society to see displays, re-enactments and learn more about Raytown’s history.

The event was so successful that it has caused talk of creating an annual event celebrating Raytown's history each year in the fall. The event could be a re-invention of what used to be the Raytown Round-up Days.

We think it is a good idea. What do you think?

Mark Your Calendar . . . On Tuesday, November 2, 2021 the City of Raytown has scheduled a 2.5% sales tax election on any internet sales. This includes medicinal drugs, vitamins, food, anything purchased on the internet including Amazon, ladies!

Despite what you will hear between now and November 2nd this is definitely a new sales tax. You will hear it referred to as a “use tax”. Call it any name you want, it is still a 2.5% tax on goods purchased.

You will also hear how it really a way to collect taxes that are not being charged on purchases made on the internet. You will be told it is simply a move to equalize what we pay at brick and mortar stores by creating a “new” tax just for the internet.

Let’s put this argument to the test. Next time you purchase something on the internet, check your receipt. You will find you have already paid the same sales tax as you pay at a brick and mortar store!

In other words, whether you purchase a new television at Walmart, or purchase it on the internet, you will pay the sales tax. The Courts have already ruled that ANY vendor with a presence in a state must charge sales tax.

In other words, yes, you are already paying the internet sales tax in addition to shipping charges on many purchases.

Check back next week as we delve deeper into the 2.5% sales tax scheduled for the November 2, 2021 ballot.

NEXT WEEK . . . STEALTH ELECTIONS and HOW THEY WORK.

The proposed 2% internet sales tax is DOUBLE TAXATION since the City of Raytown already receives sales tax from internet sales! I wonder if anyone of group would take it to court?

I don't know about others but my main reason for shopping on the internet is because the things I want are NOT available in local stores. I also place orders for me to pick up at local stores which is much easier than spending an hour or longer walking all of the isles to find what I want.

Will people who order togo or pick up at local restaurant, grocery store, or any local store be subject to this 2% tax if it is passed? If so, this is DOUBLE TAXATION!

Andy - It is NOT double taxation! Some companies that have a presence in Missouri charge sales tax on internet purchases. If a company doesn't have a presence in Missouri, then they don't. This ordinance targets those that don't already charge sales tax.
